Op-Ed: PJM Interconnection Rejects Blame for Electricity Price Increases

The increase in electricity prices facing New Jersey consumers deserves the attention it’s getting. Paying a higher cost for any good or service, especially one so critical to everyday life, is never welcome. 


A number of the state’s elected officials have called out PJM Interconnection as the root cause of rising electricity prices. Much of this rhetoric is misdirected and far from fair, but PJM does have an important story to tell about what’s actually happening today — not just in New Jersey, but across our footprint and around the country.



NJ SEED: Finger-pointing is routine in politics and the current spike in NJ electric rates has given rise to the practice. The PJM Interconnection is one of the latest targets. In the op-ed, Jeff Shields, senior manager of external communications with PJM Interconnection, defends PJM’s record. He points decisions fostate and federal decarbonization policies….” (i.e. NJ’s Energy Master Plan) The decline of production facilities is occurring as demand in increasing. The answer lies along the lines of NJ SEED’s long-standing call for a balanced approach to energy production using that utilizes all sources.
