Trump and GOP Move Fast to Reverse Energy Efficiency Rules

The rollback of energy standards is part of a broader weakening of climate rules and programs under the Trump administration and a renewed embrace of fossil energy production. The Trump administration, among other steps, has pushed to close a federal program to curb a highly potent greenhouse gas, cut funding for climate science and allowed offshore oil and gas drilling, including in the Atlantic Ocean.

NJ SEED: Since the 1980s, Congress has created — or directed the federal Department of Energy to create — national energy standards for approximately 60 different types of products, ranging from light bulbs to washing machines, dryers, furnaces, microwave ovens, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, and transformers. Energy Secretary Chris Wright states, “By removing burdensome regulations put in place by the Biden administration, we are returning freedom of choice to the American people, ensuring consumers can choose the home appliances that work best for their lives and budgets. …This power should not belong to the federal government.”
