Sea-Level Rise, Sunny-Day Flooding — and Shore Building Boom

Warnings about sea-level rise haven’t stopped the building boom at the Jersey Shore even as scientific studies predict increased flooding in the coming decades that eventually will affect not only the shoreline but also inland communities.

NJ SEED:  Whatever the multiple causes of sea level rise, the fact is sea levels are currently rising at an annual measurable rate. Allowing homes to be built close to the shoreline and raised on higher and higher stilts is not a solution. Danielle McCulloch, Executive Director of the American Littoral Society put the issue in proper perspective when he stated, “We really need to be smart about where we are building.”
