OPINION: New Jersey liquor law reforms boost breweries, business

New Jersey alcohol businesses have too often faced uncertainty about what activities were permitted and what approvals were required, particularly after the 2023 reform law. Brewery owners consistently told us that New Jersey’s regulatory framework made it harder to compete with craft manufacturers across state lines. 

The problem extends beyond breweries. Across New Jersey, inactive liquor licenses have sat unused for years, limiting opportunities for entrepreneurs, redevelopment projects, and downtown revitalization.

NJ SEED: NJ’s liquor laws and regulations are complex and often confusing causing the state to lag behind many other states in providing for this important segment of the economy.
