NJ Lt. Gov. Caldwell Resigns After Sherrill Calls for His Departure

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Friday afternoon that Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell has resigned.

Following Caldwell’s official departure, the lieutenant governor as well as secretary of state posts are now vacant.

NJ SEED: Governor Sherrill acted quickly and decisively when an investigation determined that the “Lieutenant Governor engaged in serious, repeated violations of state policy…”. According to Article V, Section 1, paragraph 8 of the state constitution, the governor has 45 days from the date of the resignation of the lt. governor to name a successor. The constitution, however, is not clear on any special requirements for replacing the cabinet official who also served as lt. governor. Presumably the governor has same appointive power as for all other state agency heads. She is likely to fill the office with an interim (Which she has already done) until she appoints a new lt. governor who will hold both positions.
