NJ Governor’s Race: The big issues

The next governor will face a host of pressing issues, including high taxes, school aid cuts and the loss of federal funding for social safety-net programs. How much time the candidates will spend detailing their plans for tackling these and other issues is unknown, but polling indicates offering solutions that voters think could help solve some of the state’s problems could help either of the major-party candidates, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) or Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

NJ SEED: With Labor Day 2025 behind us, the focus turns to the fall General Election. All eighty seats in the General Assembly are up for election as is, of course, the governor. State Senate seats will not be up for election until 2027. While the two major party candidates for governor throw ads and insults at each other, the voters might be interested in issues. NJ Spotlight reporters highlight some of the most important challenges the next governor will face.
