Gov. Phil Murphy conditionally vetoed legislation Monday that would require data centers to report their water and electricity use, asking lawmakers to add provisions directing state regulators to weigh whether those data centers’ power and cooling demands are unduly burdening other ratepayers.

NJ SEED: Data centers consume tremendous quantities of energy. If NJ is to be a player in the emerging age of artificial intelligence (AI), it must be prepared to provide huge amounts of energy to data centers. Protecting residential ratepayers from an unfair burden of the cost of producing the required power requires careful monitoring of demand and development of all available sources of energy.
