New Jersey American Water Acquires Salem City Water and Sewer Systems

An $18 million acquisition of the city of Salem’s water and wastewater systems was finalized last week. 


The sale marks New Jersey American Water’s sixth purchase of a municipal water system over the last six years. The company is a subsidiary of the largest investor-owned water utility in the U.S.

NJ SEED:  The cost to assure that drinking water meets strict PFAS standards is leading more and more community water systems to turn over their operations to large purveyors like American Water. The company’s size could allow it to spread costs across a large number of communities thereby keeping the cost to consumers as low as possible.
