GOP to Democrats: Reclaim Cash, Skip Pork to Shrink NJ Budget Gap

Weeks before lawmakers must approve an annual state budget, Republicans are pitching cost-saving proposals and urging majority Democrats to take a look. 


Among the GOP-backed ideas is a call to repurpose unspent balances from prior-year appropriations, which they estimate could free up hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

NJ SEED: Governor Sherrill is leading the way in proposing cuts to reduce the structural deficit. The Legislature would be well advised to follow her lead. One area that has public support would be to eliminate, or greatly reduce, the practice of adding appropriations at the last minute (aka Christmas Tree items).
