Decades after Ford Motor Company began dumping toxic waste in a Native American neighborhood of Ringwood, and years into the federal government’s second attempt at cleaning up the mess, New Jersey has filed a new lawsuit seeking a full environmental restoration of the area.
In the complaint, filed in state court, New Jersey officials argue Ford should pay for having destroyed the ability of residents to use and enjoy the natural resources around them, plus the cost of returning those natural resources to a pristine condition. If the state prevails, it’s unclear just how much money Ford will be on the hook for.
NJ SEED: Ford has and continues to assert its assumption of responsibility for the clean-up. The DEP suit appears to go deeper into Ford’s pocket than Superfund requirements.
