Environmentalists gathered on the boardwalk in Asbury Park Tuesday (8/6) to celebrate publication by the state Department of Environmental Protection of proposed new guidelines for developing at the Jersey Shore. The Resilient Environments and Landscapes Rules, or REAL, will make homes and businesses more resilient as the state deals with sea level rise, the DEP said.

NJ SEED: The proposed rule will have a significant impact on construction at the Jersey shore if adopted in its present form. A Rutgers study suggests a 66% chance that sea level will rise from ½ to one foot between 2000 and 2030 and from one to two feet between 2000 and 2050. Even if the computer modeling is wrong, as it frequently is, the east coast is experiencing subsidence along with inevitable climate change. The impact on constriction must be considered. The rule is open for comment until November.
