The US Constitution, the foundation on which our federal republic rests, was signed on September 17, 1787. We honor our founding document. It is also a time to recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens. As we note this occasion, may we be continually guided by the words of Thomas Jefferson who wrote in the Declaration of Independence that, “governments … derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Note: not the other way around.
