Another New Year, Another Automatic Toll Hike for NJ Drivers

November 28, 2022 | njspotlightnews.org

For the second year in a row, tolls will be going up automatically at the start of a new year on New Jersey’s major toll roads.

The increases totaling 3% will go into effect on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and Atlantic City Expressway on Jan. 1 under operating budgets adopted in recent weeks by the respective agencies that administer the toll roads.

The toll-road operators can hike tolls by as much as 3% annually without holding new rounds of public hearings under a controversial new policy the agencies authorized in 2020.

NJ SEED: Lessons on how to make governing more efficient. Toll-road Commissioners (like legislators in some cases) can avoid taking responsibility for hiking tolls and taxes simply by saying “policy made me do it”. An added bonus for Parkway, Turnpike and AC Expressway Commissioners is they don’t have to waste their valuable time attending public hearings and pretending to listen to those pesky citizens.
