The added spending, tacked on primarily by majority Democrats in the final days before the July 1 start of the state’s fiscal year, helped to inflate the size of the latest annual budget to a record-high $56.7 billion, according to budget documents.
The last-minute additions also widened the gap between the total planned expenditures and how much state government is projected to take in from taxes and other sources of revenue during the 2025 fiscal year, which ends June 30. That structural gap, or imbalance, is now more than $2 billion.
